Excel inserts too many rows

When I highlight a group of rows and click "Insert" it
inserts 100's of rows instead of the 5 I highlighted. I
am using Office 2000 SP-3

Is it possible that the 5 rows you highlighted have a great whack of hidden
rows within the range? Like maybe you are selecting rows 2 through 200 with
only 5 rows visible?

I had thought of that, but the problem is that is does
not do it consistently. Within the same document on the
same 5 rows it does it often enough to be a pain, but not
often enough to recreate whenever I want it to. Which
then rules out hidden rows causing the problem. Any
other ideas?
