I've been told by a user to be careful if I have old Excel files (Excel 97)
and install Office XP (the most recent version of MS Office). They told me
that the installation erases old versions of Office including actual Excel
data files. Is that true? Also....is Office XP backward compatible with
older versions of excel files (Excel 97) (i.e., can Excel 97 files be read
with the newest version of Excel?)....Thanks.

All versions of XL since XL97 have the same file format (including
MacXL), so your files will be backward compatible. New features in XP
aren't supported in 97, obviously, but that's not generally an issue
unless you're using VBA6 macros.

No installation I know of deletes your data files.

Strictly true, unless you consider files in XLStart to be "data
files". These are deleted during an install.

The most recent version of MS office (for the PC) is 2003, not XP (2002).
