Using Access 97 trying to import a excel 97 worksheet (All
fields set to general format) from a workbook. Using the
wizard everthing looks ok Going to new table with field
headings etc However get msg 'An error occured while
trying to import....'
When trying to link to spreadsheet can once again see all
column data in wizard setup but when link is opened some
columns have no data in at all I have spreadseet
available to send you This is weird!!

Hi,

This may be due to some null values/irrelevant values in a cell of the
worksheet.
Please see the paste errors table (it is created if there is any error while
importing) and look the record numer.

Thanks
SAM

BECAUSE THE WIZARD ONLY LOOKS AT THE FIRST RECORD TO
DESIDE WHAT TYPE OF DATA YOU HAVE (ALHPA OR NUMERIC) IT
SOMETIMES CREATES IMPORT PROBLEMS RATHER THAN MAKING IT
EASIER. EXAMPLE WOULD BE YOU HAVE A FIELD IN YOUR .XLS
WHERE THE FIRST RECORD HAS AN ENTRY LIKE 11111111 THE NEXT
THREE RECORDS ARE ALSO NUMERIC BUT THEN DURING IMPORT THE
WIZARD SEES RECORD FIVE WHICH MIGHT BE A12345 OR 12345AL,
SINCE THE WIZARD BY THIS TIME THINKS EVERY THING IN THAT
FIELD IS NUMBERIC IT DROPS THE DATA OUT OF THE FIELDS
WHEREVER IT SEES ALPHA STUFF. I HAVE A NON PROFESSIONAL
FIX FOR THIS. I OPEN THE .XLS INSERT A ROW JUST UNDER THE
HEADING. THEN IN FIELDS THAT I KNOW ALL DATA WILL BE
DOLLAR AMOUNTS I KEY IN 0.00. IF ALL RECORDS IN THE NEXT
FIELD IS A DATE I KEY IN 01/01/2003. IN ANY FIELD WHERE
THE DATA COULD BE A MIX I KEY IN "A" BECAUSE EVEN IF IT'S
ALL NUMBERS YOU CAN IMPORT AS TEXT BECAUSE A FIELD WITH
SOME NUMBERS AND SOME NUMBERS WITH ALPHA CHARATERS WILL
NEVER BE A FIELD YOU WOULD TRY TO GET A TOTAL ON SO IT'S
SAFE.

I guess neither Sam nor Sandee understood the problem, because what actually happend, I guess, was that you didn't get to import the file at all, and didn't get an Import Error table. I had the same problem now in Access 2000, and thanks to your experience, I fixed it too!! :) I had a leading space in one of my column headings ... I would have thought that when Access first tells us that "some headings are unsuitable, the wizard will automatically assign valid field names", that's what the wizard will do, NOT reject the whole import file!!
