Does anyone know why whatever I right as a title for the yy axis, I always
get a title window that is not long enough for the written title (regardless
of font size). There are always hidden letters. And the size of the window is
not changeable.
Many thanks

Hi, I am having the same problem. It frustrating beyond belief. The best
I've ever been able to do is just not use Y axis labels, and make my own Text
boxes instead, which then also don't work right, but at least you can resize
those. Its a real pain in the rear. If someone has a better solution,
please let me know as well.

Instead of using the chart title, you can add a text box to the chart.
In the text box, you can type the title text, or link to a worksheet cell.

To link to a cell:

Click on the chart to select it
Type an equal sign -- you'll see it appear in the formula bar
(you don't need to click in the formula bar before typing)
Click on the cell that contains the text for the chart, e.g. C6
Press the Enter key.
Drag the text box from the centre of the chart to the top
Use the buttons on the formatting toolbar to format the text

Hi,

Thanks for your comment. Is there any way to get the program to work as
intended, where we can have the benefits of auto scaling and so on? Like, is
there a patch or something? Or is this simply a bug that renders chart axis
labels useless?

Thanks,
Dixit

Many thanks Debra. What you wrote was quite useful. However I am sure that
guys from Microsoft are reading this stuff, and they have the right answer to
my question. I wonder why they are not kind enough, or even honnest enough,
to give it to all of us. I am a licenced user, and surely most of us are. The
bug is theirs. So please give us the right answer.

José, Dixit -

It's always a popular sport to attribute evil motives to Microsoft. This
oversimplifies the issue you are having, and does a disservice to you and to
Microsoft. It is ludicrous to think they are not "kind" or "honest" enough to help
their customers solve a bug.

The problem you describe is a difficult one to reproduce. I have spent some time
trying to track it down myself, because it affects a small fraction of my clients. I
have found very few combinations of settings that reproduce the problem on any of
the computers at my disposal, although some people report the problem much more
frequently. Apparently it is related to hardware configurations and to things I have
not figured out. When it does occur on any of my machines, I can usually reduce its
effects by changing the zoom, or the font, or the font size.

A commonly suggested workaround is to type a few meaningless characters (say, three
spaces and a period; the last character cannot be a space), then select and format
just these characters so the font color matches the background color. Not too
satisfying, but at least it usually works.

Note that in print preview and in printed charts, the axis titles are correctly
rendered.
