Excel Fonts Won't Change Color

A friend of mine is having a problem with excel in that excel won't let font
colors change. When going thru the motions to change the font color, the
format window indicates the color change was accepted, but once 'ok' is
clicked, the color remains black in the spreadsheet, as well as the print
preview. There must be a lock on certain cells or something, just don't know
where to look.

Thanks,

I use a b&w printer and print preview shows only b&w. But I can change colors
in the worksheet.

I can change this setting:
File|page setup|Sheet tab
and set it for B&W, but it still shows the colors on the screen.

But I couldn't duplicate it...

But I do have another guess.

Do those cells have Format|conditional formatting set?

If yes, then if the condition is true, then those colors/formats will be the
ones you see.

You shouldn't be able to see that dialog if you can't change things, so I don't
think locked cells on a protected worksheet is the problem.

Maybe your friend is confusing the font colour and the fill colour. If
the high contrast setting is turned on you won't see the fill colour.
There's information in the following MSKB article:

OFF: Changes to Fill Colour and Fill Pattern Are Not Displayed
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320531

And, as Dave mentioned, if your friend has a black and white printer,
colours won't appear in Print Preview.

In a similar post, Earl Kiosterud suggested looking at the numberformat and
seeing if it included things like:

[Black]$#,##0_-;[Red]$#,##0-

Those seem to supersede any manual formatting.
