"Excel.exe has generated errors and needs to close" when saving fi

I have a client who is receiving this error when saving Excel files. This
does not occur all the time - it seems to be completely random. We have
followed the advice of every article we have found and the odd thing is that
the user is now using a different computer and the same error is occurring.
This is with Excel 2003 and is fully patched. Does anybody have any ideas?

Is he by any chance saving to a network folder that is highly nested? Windows
has problems with filenames longer than 255 characters, which crashes some
Excel versions.
