How do I run Chkdsk utility to correct this? I am able to open my files
despite this message. Is there any risk to doing this?

Hi,

It's highly unlikely that ChkDsk will have any effect.

Could you give us the entire error message exactly?

It might clear up by reinstalling Office or Excel.

chkdsk utility
c:\documents and settings\my name\application data\microsoft\excel\excel10xlb
unfortunately i no longer have the installation disc code number so I cannot
reinstall.

excel10.xlb
is where xl2002 stores your customized toolbars.

You can close excel and delete that file.

Then recreate it in your spare time.

If you're worried, then just move that *.xlb file to a safe home and restart
excel to test.

After I've customized my toolbar, I'll make a backup of it. Then I can just
copy my backup file into that folder whenever it gets corrupted (or I break
it!).

Wouldn't it be here ? Go look:
c:\documents and settings\my name\application
data\microsoft\excel\excel10xlb

Best wishes Harald

Look in all files, including hidden, etc. for

*.xlb

Just to add to Harald's response...

Depending on how you show important files, you may not be able to traverse to
that directory by just pointing and clicking in windows explorer.

But you can use:
Windows start button|Run
type (or copy|paste):
"c:\documents and settings\my name\application data\microsoft\excel"

And you should be at that folder.

(did you change the path to include "my name"? If you did, change it back in
that run dialog.)

I have a difficult time finding that folder, too.

So I use
Windows|start button|Run
type:
%appdata%
and hit enter.

Then I can point and click to drill deeper.

Ah yes, hidden system files and directories, I forget that some people leave
that setting on. Sorry.

Best wishes Harald
