This morning, I used Excel 2000 without any problems. This afternoon, I
cannot open it. Every time I try, I get the following error:

"EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Rebooting does not fix the problem. Shutting down and restarting does not
fix the problem. It appears that there have been a flurry of similar
complaints on the message board today. Does anyone have any ideas on how to
fix this?

Open it on someone else's PC with a different version (newer, I guess
of Excel and try to re-save it.

This worked for me (I also moved the position of the active cell
where the cursor is), although the file has given me problems for
month now. The error on opening was easy to fix, though, by doin
this.

I would just be worried that, as in the case with my file, this i
symptomatic of a file that is somehow corrupt

Start Excel in safe mode (to avoid loading anything that could cause problems
(toolbars/addins/macros)

With excel closed
windows start button|run
excel /safe

Back to excel to test it.

If that worked, maybe it was a toolbar that went bad.

close excel
Windows|start button|find/search)
look for *.xlb
Rename them all to *.xlbOLD

Back to excel to test.

If it worked, just delete those *.xlbold files and rebuild any toolbars at your
leisure.

If none of this worked, Chip Pearson has documented some techniques to try when
you're having trouble starting excel.
