Excel doesn't open files. Unable to read file

I haven't made any changes but now find that files in My Documents cannot be
opened by Excel or Word. Excel gives a message "unable to read file'. Word
gives a message "the file ___________ is not availalbe. I have copied the
files and taken them to other computers and the files are fine.
