excel creates multiple temp files when saving

Excel is creating multiple temp files of my worksheet when I save. I stumbled
accross this several hours ago while looking thru my documents. In some
instances the same worksheet was out there more than forty times. I checked
online help but cannot find any fixes or documentation for this.

See if this still happens when you temporarily disable anti-virus. Excel
creates a temp file copy when saving and as a last change renames the file.
If this gets interrupted for any reason, it leaves a temp file

Just a follow up question...

What are the names of these files?

Are they all 8 characters long with no extension? If that's the case, then
Nick's response could offer the solution.

And if the user (you???) doesn't have the correct permissions, then that could
be another cause.

If the files don't look like that (8 characters, no extension), then these
aren't the causes/solutions.

Hi Guys
I seem to be suddenly having this same problem whilst using excel 2003.
Have used it for ages with no problems but now when I go to save a file it
creates a file with the same name but the following extention
..xls~RF124166a.temp I tried your suggestion of turning off my anti virus and
it appears to stop this problem however is there any other way of fixing this
condition as turning virus protection on and off is a real pain not to
mention very secure. Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Maxine

Personally I would think this is an issue for the AV vendor if Excel was
working fine. It is likely an update has happened to the AV that is not
working well with Excel.

It is just interrupting the save process and presuming a virus

Thanks Nick,
I have sent them off an email as well so hopefully they may come up with
something.
Cheers

Well, disabling anti-virus worked for me. For the record: I have Micro Trend
installed and the file extension usually looked something like this: RF53222.
This just happened recently and probably was due to an update for the
anti-virus. However, the other good I discovered (after playing around
with the anti-virus) that I am able to exclude certain files and folders in
the advanced setup. So, right now My Documents folder is not being scanned
and the problem has disappeared. It never occured to me that the anti-virus
could be the cause. I'd like to thank Nick for solving this problem and
everyone else for responding. Mike
