Excel creates a new file every time I open a workbook

When I open a workbook Excel adds a 1 to the file name,
thereby creating a new file. How do I turn this off? This
has just started in the last day or so.

From Ron Rosenburg previously:-

Does this happen when you use Excel's File-->Open command?

Are you opening a template (XLT) file from a Windows folder like Explorer or
My Computer? If so this is expected behavior as Excel is opening a copy of
the file/template.

If this only happens when you open any Excel file from a Windows folder you
may need to update the XLS File type:

1. From any Windows folder, choose Tools-->Folder Options
2. Click the File Types tab
3. Scroll down the list and select the "Microsoft Excel Worksheet" listing
4. Click the Edit button
5. The bolded action should be "Open". It may be "New", which causes a copy
of the file to open (with the number 1 next to it)
6. If necessary, click "Open" and then click the Set Default button
7. Click OK twice

From Peo Sjoblom previously:-

Is the file saved as template *.xlt? If it is it will open a regular file
*.xls and put 1 at the end of the name before
the file extension. Do a save as, save as *.xls and delete the 1, next time
you open this (xls file) it should open
normally

And then lil ol me (Hopefully one of them gets you sorted

If you hit Window do you also see the same file with a 2 at the end. If so then
select the one with a 2, use the X at the top right of the File window to close
it and then save the remaining file (The 1 should have disappeared now). This
happen sif you hit Window / New Window and then save your file. You get a
second view of it, but having saved it like that you will always see it like
that until you change it.

Thanks for that - It wasn't exactly as you indicated but
pointed me in the right direction. It seems I had
customised files at some point which caused the problem.
Solution: Follow your instructions as below and then
click Restore.

Your invaluable assistance contrasts with that of
Microsoft Online Support Professional who had me waste 10
hours uninstalling all manner of software etc.

Cheers.

LOL - and we don't even charge you :-) Appreciate the feedback though, thanks.

Hello everyone

I have the opposite issue.
We are sharing a workbook "A" on a network.
We would like everybody to open this workbook as NEW everytime by default
I wonder if there is an option to do that for that specific file only.

To edit the shared file, there is anoter workbook "b" wit a vba macro that should access
The shared file "a" make the changes and then close the file "a"

We would like to be able to check the shared file and edit it whitout the message
"the file is in use by another person" pop up.

I wonder if there is a way to do this without using passwords

Please advise
