Using Office XP on windows 98. Whenever Excel (v2002) is
opened the user gets either a blue screen of death, low
resources error or a general fault protection error. User
has no problems with opening word or powerpoint. Have
already repaired and re-installed application suite to no
avail.

This isn't guaranteed to solve the problem, but it's worth a try. Use
Windows Explorer to search all of this user's hard disks for files with a
..XLB extension. Delete any that you find. This may be a hidden file, so
you'll need to set Explorer to show hidden files before searching. Excel
uses XLB files to store information about its toolbar configuration, but
they frequently become corrupt and cause strange problems like this. Excel
will create clean new default versions after you delete the old corrupt
ones, but the user will lose any toolbar customizations they've made.

Rob,

I tried your suggestion and it worked perfectly. There
was only one .XLB file on my system and it was created
around the same time I started havinbg problems. I
deleted it and excel started working.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

Glad to hear it! Thanks for letting me know as well. That's very helpful
for troubleshooting future problems.
