Hi,

I'm using Office 2000 SP3 with all the updates installed under Windows XP
Service Pack 2. Every time I try to execute Excel, I get an error telling
me that Microsoft Excel for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvinience.

When I click the hyperlink that says " For more information <u>click
here</u> " I get a box showing the following:

AppName: excel.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.8924 ModName: adobep~1.dll
ModVer: 5.0.0.327 Offset: 00026521

Someone please help. Re-installing the application and updates does not
resolve the issue.

TIA

Hi Rima,

This is a default list of things-to-do when Excel exhibits (startup)
problems.

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a (hidden) workbook
that is loaded upon XL's start, which bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck them one at the
time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is entered after
"Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your toolbar customisation
file. Locate all files with extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to
something like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Also, NAV has shown to cause "Excel caused an invalid page
fault in module VBE6.DLL".
You might try disabling the Office plug in of NAV.

Other causes may be a full TEMP folder:

In Windows 95/98 and ME

Delete all files in C:\Windows\Temp

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp
and delete all files in there.

They are often left behind by installing programs but Excel needs the space.

Excel 2003 has some new features, which may disable certain files when Excel
thought them to be the cause of a crash.

If you have had a problem with Personal.xls, Excel may have labeled it as
suspect.
In Excel, select Help | About Microsoft Excel.
Click the button near the bottom labeled "Disabled Items..."
If Personal.xls is listed, select it and click Enable.

This is what MS has to say about startup problems:

And this about startup switches:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation did the
trick!

That worked so I didn't try anything else. Thanks a million Jan!

I apologize for the multiple posts. While clicking the post message button,
Firefox was simply hanging. When I worked my way back into the forum, I
found the multiple post.

If there is a moderator or someone else that could delete those please do
so.

Thank you,
Rima

That is great.
But you didn't actually solve your problem. All you are doing now is
preventing Excel from loading addins and the files in it's startup
directories. The problem lies there.
I strongly suggest you to do the things listed immediately below the line
you stated above.

As Jan has said, all you have done is partially cripple your Applications
potential abilities. The most common cause of this with that version used
to be a corrupt Toolbar customistaion file called *.xlb

I would suggest you go find and delete that file and then restart Excel
normally.

Hi Jan, is it me or are they screwing with URLs again. The start up switch
one doesn't work for me. Just noticed that a few other ones I tend to use
also seem to error out for me as well.

Hi Ken,

AFAIK, the Automation switch does not force Excel to ignore the xlb file.
But I could be wrong.
