A friend has sent me a spreadsheet she uses at work hoping I can find the
reason for this error.
In cells, B16:L16 are numbers which Excel totals as $1548.04. Added by hand
or by a calculator(I used a TI scientific calculator) the numbers total to
be $1548.06. The numbers are:
137.00
865.21
42.72
130.59
304.77
12.56
4.17
11.93
1.46
32.75
4.90
Adding the numbers up in a blank spreadsheet Excel still calculates
$1548.04. I have an AMD 1 Ghz processor My friend has an Intel CPU. I'm
using Excel 2002. She is using Excel 2000.

Thanks in advance

Brian,

I used Excel and got 1548.06 so I doubt it's excel. Is
it possible that you get more digits after the decimal
if you view more decimal places... If not, I don't know
what to tell you because my computer adds them
correctly.

Brian,

I would suggest that what you are seeing is numbers formatted to 2 dec
places, but which in reality have more decimal places. For instance if you
add 123.243 and 11.223 you get 134.466, but if all of the numbers are
formatted as 2 dec places you would see the following 3 values
123.24
11.22
134.47
which (apparentlky) does not add up. Select all the cells and increase the
number of dec places, and you will see if this is the problem.

I pasted those numbers in, and get 1548.06 in Excel 2000.

I suspect the problem is with how the number appears versus what it is, and
there are many threads on rounding in this group.

Did you check this by typing the numbers in by hand, or by pasting them from
the haunted spreadsheet? By hand you should get 1548.06..

Thank you all for your help. I typed in the numbers instead of pasting them
in, and got $1548.06. I'll search for past postings on rounding and try to
resolve them problem in the spreadsheet.

Thank you,

Brian

Hi Brian - I had a similar problem. My problem involved one of the
numbers actually being the result of a percentage calculation which
rounded the answer up from 1.315 to 1.32. When I multiplied the answer,
the calculation remembered the 1.315, not the 1.32 which was on the
screen. So I inserted ROUND in the formula and it fixed the problem.
Cheers, Kanga
