When using my Excel 97 program, every time I try to do
anything that has an equal sign (=), a plus (+), or a
minus sign (-) in that cell, I get the following error
window.

I can not do anything but click on the CLOSE button and
close Excel.
I can not even 'Insert' a 'Function'. The error window
pops up the instant I click the 'Function' selection from
the 'Insert' menu. If I try to edit a cell with an
equation in it (from old data files), the error window
pops up the instant I click in the edit window. If I type
anything into a cell already containing an equation
(again, from old data files), the error window pops up the
instant I press the key. I have to delete the equation
first, then I can make the entry.
I can enter the =, +, - into a cell as a label, i.e.-
'=, '+, or '-. If I try to enter any of these signs
first, such as in an equation or a negative number, the
error window pops up the instant I press the key. If I
enter the equation as a label then try to edit out the
[ ' ] sign, the error window pops up the instant I delete
the [ ' ].
I have reinstalled the Office 97, Professional Edition
software using my original CD and I still have the same
problem. I have checked the System Device Manager for
problems and have found none.
