Excel 5.0 crashes

I am currently using Excel 5.0 on my Windows XP system.
This is a new problem that has not occurred before, and I
am a little at a loss to solve it. When I try to make a
change to a spreadsheet and SAVE or SAVE AS..., I get the
following error message: "An error has occurred in your
application... If you choose Ignore,... If you chose
Close..." Whichever option I select, I get this ominous
message: "EXCEL caused a General Protection Fault in
Module EXCEL.EXE at 001A:54F5. Choose Close. EXCEL will
close"

Any ideas?

somewhat of a fix

I have the same issue on an XP SP2 machine. The only way around it I've found is to reformat and install XP without SP2. Install Excel 5.0, verify it works, then upgrade to SP2. Something about SP2 really wacks out the 16-bit vdm and wowexec stuff in windows. I know this is time-consuming and not ideal but since all my pre-SP2 boxes run this feature fine, so SP2 is the culprit. Can you try formatting the cells in other versions of Office or are you stuck with Xl5.0 (like I am in this instance). If anyone knows of an SP2 fix, let us know!
