Looks like those are merged cells. unmerge them...

the cells are definetly not merged. all i want to do is select "one cell" on
a worksheet and EVERYTIME i click inside that prticluar cell the cells
adjacent (sometimes above and below) it are highlighted as well and i cannot
stop it. IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY. certain cells of the worksheet are fine
and do not behave as such and others have the same problem as mentioned
above. can't someone please tell me what is wrong? i welcome and
appreciate any thoughts and help. thanks.

Open a new worksheet. Do you still have the same problem?

This problem is usually attributed to a faulty/sticking scroll wheel
on the mouse.
Try using another mouse for a while, see if it makes a difference.
