Excel 2007 Error: Selecting color for font change causes crash

We have a spreadsheet translated from an earlier version of Excel (I believe
2000) in which we use color coded text. We select text, select the Font
color button, it brings up the Color popup, we select a color...and instant
crash and hang. It requires a hard boot to clear the machine.

Currently the file is saved as .xlsx, running under Vista Ultimate. To our
knowledge everything is updated to current fixes. Any ideas what we can do
about this bug?
The only addins active are the Business Contact manager and the Google
toolbar. Any help is appreciated.

Excel 2007 Error: Selecting color for font change causes crash

I have the exact same problem. I have done all the updates.
Configuration: Windows Vista Premium, Excel 2007.

Re-Install didn't fix the problem.

Nvidia geforce 7350 running on a HP 8120N
Had the same problem with HP 8020N

I don't need to reboot, just shutsdown Excel.

It can be compability mode or a brand new xlsx. The error still occurs about 75 to 85% of the time.

This problem is a real gem, when you're working with hundreds of spreadsheets.

I have worked this office installation on other XP machines and cannot recreate the problem.

I am attempting process of elimination:

Vista
HP
Nvidia
Intel

If anyone has a solution or contribution, please post.

Diagnostic:

hpz3r4v2.dll is listed as faulting module. I'd take a guess that that is
a DLL from HP.
What (default) printer do you have? Do you have the newest printer
driver?
As odd as it sounds, but a printer driver has influence on what is
displayed on the screen, so it is possible that a problematic printer
driver can crash Excel when you switch colors.

Solution:

That's it!!

I've switched our default printer to One Note, and the errors have stopped. When it's time to print, we simply scroll down the list in the printer dialog box and use the HP.

So who will tell HP about this bug?
