I have about 300 entries in two columns:

CLIENT DATE IN
data data
data data

etc

Date in contains day/month/year

I am attempting to chart the number of requests by client grouped by month.
I've tried to muddle through the pivot chart help but got completely lost.

Where can I find a clear step by step to guide me through this?

On the chart or pivottable, right click on your DATE IN
field 'button' and choose "Group and Outline..." then
choose "Group." You will get a dialog box allowing you to
specify how to group the dates (you want to
choose 'Months'). Full details in help: type "group dates
pivottable."

That is what I tried first - I thought I was doing something wrong. When I
click the field and pick group I get the message "Cannot group that
selection".

Step by step, this is what I am doing.

1. In a worksheet I have the two columns which I select.

2. Tools/pivot table and accept the defaults of "Microsoft Office Excel list
or database" and "PivotTable" and then Next >

3. Accept the highlighted ranges and finish

4. Drag my "client" to the left (rows) and the "date in" to the top
(columns). When I drag the "date in" to the columns I get the message "The
field you are dropping into the column area exceeds 255 items. Only the
first 255 items will be displayed as columns. To include all of the field's
data in your PivotTable report, drop it into a different area, such as the
data area." (I have also tried dropping it into the data area but I only
get a count of all of the files and I get the same 'Can't group' message
when I try to group there.

Put the Date field into the row area, and group it, then move it to the
column area, where it should fit.

If your date field includes blank cells, or cells with text, you won't
be able to group the dates.

This did the trick. Thanks.
