Problem: after entering a formula "+A10" into a cell, Excel changes this into
text and displays the formula instead of the result

Thanks Stephane. I forgot to include the "=" in the example that I used that
in the explanation of the problem. I have since found out that this was
happening when a column was inserted to the right of a column that was
formatted as text, any formulas entered were treated as text. If a column
was inserted to the right of a column formatted with numbers, the formula's
worked OK. Go figure??!!

When you insert a column to the right of another, it will take on all
formatting and characteristics of that column, hence your 'problem'
