Ben

Hi,

I've just installed Office 2002 on 10 PCs using group policy software
deployment. Users have reported that saving files is very slow, I've looked
at the systems, and it doesn't seem to be the actual saving of files, or the
typing of the file name. When users do file save, the type the file name, it
can take up to 10 seconds for what they type to be displayed, while the
system just hangs/freezes. I've run the office and windows updates, but it
seems to be down to McAfee Virus Scan 4.5.1. If I disable the system scan,
typing the file name is displayed real time, enable it again and the system
hang comes back. I've tried disabling the heuristic scanning but this had no
effect.

Has anyone seen this beofre? Is there anyway to fox it? Patch, update or
disabling a system setting?

Many thanks

Ben

Are you using McAfee VirusScan v4.5.1 SP1 ?

What OS is this running under ?

Yes, v4.5.1 sp1, scan engine 4.3.20 dat 4.0.4406, running on Windows 2000
sp4 with all the latest updates & hotfixes. Systems are compaq evo 530s
(small form factor), P4, 256mb ram, 38gb hard disk (36gb free).

Cheers

Ben

I have had no problem with Office 2000 using VirusScan v4.5.1 SP1 on Win2K SP4 workstations.
I use Office XP (2002) on WinXP SP2 and use VirusScan Enterprise v7.1. However, when I did
try v4.5.1 SP1 on this platform I had other problems but NOT Office XP problems.

You might want to place a query in the McAfee Forums...

We were using Office 2000, which never had a problem, however we were told
by head office to start rolling Office XP out, which is when the problems
have occured.

I have VirusScan Enterprise v7.1 & v8.0 which were sent to us by head office
last week, however I have not tried installing these yet, and I need to test
them before I do begin rolling them out. At the moment 4.5.1 is fairly
stable and has been working fine. I don't want to start installing 7.1 or
even 8 before its fully tested, especially not while doing a roll out of
Office XP. I might have to bite the bullet though, and install it on the PCs
of the users who are shouting the loudest, to keep them happy.

Trouble is this Office roll out is meant to be complete by tomorrow, and I
still have 150+ workstations to install it on :-(

Ben

I hear what you are saying and I know what it is to roll-out new products. That is why I
"lean" on Symantec Enterprise Ghost to clone platforms.

v8.0i is very complicated and I did not like it.
However, I can state v7.1E is *very* stable and is a very good product. I am using it on
this PC that I am now posting from.
