Excel 2000 - Problem with Autofilter

I'm trying to filter a list of values ranging from -500,000 to 500,00
to show just those rows with values between -5 and 5. Hence, I'v
asked "Custom Autofilter" to show "greater than or equal to" -4.97 (th
last value above -5 which is not actually in the list) and "less tha
or equal to" 4.31 (the last value below 5).

When I then ran the filter, I noticed some huge (positive) values ha
been returned. I then went back to the Custom Autofilter and the valu
4.31 next to the "less than or equal to" box had changed to 11414!
have absolutely no idea why this happened. I've reset the criteri
many times now and every time the same thing has happened and alway
the same number 11414. I've even tried another spreadsheet with th
same list of numbers - but again the exact same problem.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening here? This is driving m
nuts!

Many thanks in advance!

SRL,

Excel somehow sees your value 4.31 as a date. The number value of 1st
april 1931 (4.31) = 11414
Because of the regional setting of my computer (Dutch) I can't reproduce
your error, but maybe this helps.

Further looking at it and testing it with 4-31 rather than 4.31 gave me ( XL
XP) the same effect.
I think that if you use 4.311 of 4.309 or something like that your problem
will be solved. At least that transformation won't occur anymore as far as
I can test.
