Problem:
Excel hangs on startup after presenting logo and before it fully
loads.

System info:
Excel 2000, Windows 98 (2nd edn), Norton Antivirus (Systemworks) 2004,
Control Panel reports System Resources 78% free.

Checks:
Uninstalled Office.
Uninstalled Systemworks.
Reinstalled Office, problem still occured.
Reinstalled Systemworks, problem still occured.
Scanned drives for errors incl surface scan. No erros found.
Finally: Booted from another older partition, Excel booted OK, so it
isn't a RAM problem.

I don't want to copy in the other partition and then have to reinstall
drivers. The problem indicates a bad hook is in the registery. I
phoned Symantec but they want to charge me money. I'd bet safely the
problem is caused by Nortons Antivirus.

Can anyone help?

TIA

Bruce

I'd try this before I blamed the AV.

Sometimes the file that holds your toolbar customizations gets hosed.

You could use windows start button|Find to look for *.xlb.

Rename all you find to *.xlbOLD

Then open excel to see if that helps.

If it fixed the problem, toss those *.xlbOLD files. You'll have to rebuild all
your customizations, though.

If it didn't fix it, rename them back to *.xlb.

If this didn't work, Chip Pearson has documented some techniques to try when
you're having trouble starting excel.
