Hello all,

I'm having a problem opening an Excel file containing
macros. I'm running W2K SP4 with Excel 2000 SP3. The
problem occurs like this:

1) I double click on the file to open it then I'm prompted
if I want to enable or disable macros. I click enable,
the file opens then Excel gives me a program error
window. The msg says:

------
Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
----

2) This is really strange because I managed to get the
file open by doing this:

Double click on the file to open it then I'm prompted if I
want to enable or disable macros. I click disable and the
file opens. I save the file and close Excel. Open the
file, click enable macros and the file opens. No error.
I make my changes, save and exit Excel. If I then try to
open the file again with macros enabled I get the error
msg on every try. I have to repeat step 2 (disable
macros, save file and exit Excel) each time to use the
file.

Any ideas as to why I keep getting an error msg everytime
I save the file then try to open it with macros enabled?
Thanks in advance.

Your file might be corrupted. Try the following:

- Save the file as filetype webpage (html)
- close and reopen the html file
- save-as normal excel workbook

Let us know how it works out.

Thanks for the reply. I followed your steps and from my preliminary testing I am not getting any more errors. My original file was 35 mb and now it's 11 mb. Do you know if this significant reduction in file size is normal when someone does this process? Is there anything specific to look into/check for/fix in the new XLS file since it was created from HTML? I'm just wondering if anything was lost being that the file size was reduced so dramatically. Thanks in advance

Hi Oniel,

Corrupted files often have a lot of junk associated with them. So I hope
that you got rid of your junk. Anything specific? Not that I am aware of,
but be sure to check it thoroughly.

Good luck.

Kevin

One other thought: because you have VBA code, you should
download Rob Bovey's VBA code cleaner. You can find it here:
http://www.appspro.com/utilities/Cleaner.asp

Running the code cleaner will often signficantly reduce your file size.

OK thanks. I'll check out the website and maybe try the cleaner. Thanks for all your help.

I'm not sure this is relevant, but you can get rid of that
annoying "disable macros" message by doing the following:
When viewing the worksheet page (not the macro editor)
click on TOOLS->Macro->Security. Move the check mark to
the bottom option. You will lost protection from external
macros invading, but you'll get rid of the message.
