I have installed Office 2000 for small business on many
computers. On some computer when you select the number
format for a cell you get the option to show the negative
numbers within brackets. On others you only get the option
to show negatives with the minus sign. Why is this...The
option is available in Office 97. What am I missing or
doing wrong...I don't want to customize...I have seen it
within the number format.

This is a function of your Regional Settings in Windows OS.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Regional and Language Settings>Regional
Options>Customize>Currency>Negative Currency Format. Click on drop-down arrow
and select the ($1.1)

Apply and OK>Apply your way out.

You will have to close Excel then re-open to see effects.

I tried this but it didn't work...I changed the regional
settings...clicked reply ...reopened EXcel but no luck...
I even rebooted the computer...any other suggestions

Are your Regional Settings set to "English USA"?

Other languages seem to cause the brackets to not appear as an option.

Failing that, I have no other answer.

I searched Google and found nothing more than what I have already posted and
the suggestion above.

BTW after changing the Currency settings you should have to hit
Apply>OK>Apply>OK to save changes.
