I posted this thread a week before

I got the foll. problem at a customer site:

You can open every office product on the computer, only if you open
EXCEL 2000 the program remain open for a couple of seconds and then
closes itself.

I have repaired, deleted, reinstalled Office 2000, have used SR1 and SP3
and whatever, nothing changed. I can NOT reinstall windows on this
computer, because this machine is in heavy use and has years of valuable
data on it. A backup leads to no point because it is a software problem.

I have tried all SP´s for Win XP professional as well, have deleted all
Office configs in the user directories.

I must have forgotten some special place with VBAs or I need a removal
script for all office reg items or whatever- please help!

Thanks
Eberhard

There were some solutions which are not working, sorry:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q270125
OFF2000: Program Quits Immediately After Installing Project or Visio
(Q270125)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255503
OFF2000: Program Quits Immediately After Starting When SR-1/SR-1a Update
Is
Applied (Q255503)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q236592
OFF2000: Error Messages Starting Office Program, or Program Immediately
Quits on
Windows XP, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 (Q236592)

The solutions were for the following problems:
1. Productcode GC6J3 ... ? NO
2. Microsoft Project 2000 or Viso 2000 installed? NO
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Office: Admin rights for all
users: CHANGES NOTHING

Why not just copy the data elsewhere, wipe, reinstall windows / apps,
and re-populate with the data?

If you plan ahead and do everything carefully you should be able to do
it in a couple of hours tops I would have thought?

Alan.

Because this machine is in heavy use and has tons of software on it.
There are backups, but on all backups is this problem still persisting.

Excel is not the main app for this customer and so it got unnoticed
for more than a week, which means, we have no useful backup without
this error. Every other software on this machine is running very fine.

A data backup and complete prg reinstall will take aprox. 2 days.

When excel first opens up, it usually opens up to a template file. It
is possible that you have a template file that has an autorun macro
built into it to cause it to immediately shut itself down. Try
deleting the templates that are commonly used for this. They can
usually be found at the following locations (Make sure to turn on
"Show Hidden Files and Folders" in your folder options before trying
to look for these locaitons)

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user login id here>\Templates

if you find any excel files in either location, delete them

Chip Pearson has documented some techniques to try when you're having trouble
starting excel.
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Maybe something there will help.

And if you try to open excel in safe mode, does it open?

close excel
windows start button|run
excel /safe

This disables lots of stuff--addins, toolbars...
