To all that replied thanks!
I had either done all or did do all, up to and including
putting a little hair around it when using the K-Y.
The answer ,as it turns out quite serendipitously is
that one has to leave about an eighth of an inch between
the case besel rather than mating the FDD flush with the case besel
as I was doing.
