Something strange has happened to my Outlook Express/Explorer (i don't know
which)

As of yesterday - everytime i click a link in O/E email it opens a new
browser window (instead of using an existing window)????

In many years of use it has never behaved this way before

Any ideas??

In IE select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Reuse Windows for
launching short cuts.

Note: however, even with that setting, if the current window is busy
downloading content, IE will still open a new window.

Hi,
Go to Internet Options> Advanced> check "Reuse windows for launching
shortcuts."

Hope this helps,
Don

Reuse windows is selected but it still does it - it's strange that it only
started couple days ago

I think O/Express must be doing it

Yes, I know this is the IE6 newsgroup, but are you running IE6 or IE7?

I'm running IE6 & OE6 - does it make any difference to the solution?

From the headers of all your messages: "Microsoft Outlook Express
6.00.2600.0000"

Did you recently reinstall IE/OE or Windows XP? Why?

The machine is running extremely outdated and dangerously unsecure versions
of OE, IE and Windows! Get WinXP SP2 installed ASAP, then check in at
Windows Update to install all critical updates (which will be a considerable
number, even after installing SP2), then make certain Automatic Updates is
enabled.

As far as your complaint is concerned, clicking a link in an OE message has
always opened a new browser window here, but then the same window is used
for any other links in an OE message opened during the same session.

and hence my problem - instead of using the same window over (i read forums)
it opens new windows everytime

i'm getting around it by dragging the link to the same window - but it's not
working properly & i can't figure out what has changed

See if getting the machine *FULLY PATCHED* makes any difference.

And the machine /still/ isn't fully patched! It is *not* safe to have the
machine connected to the internet or any networks until you do so.

Sounds like you are trying Jim Byrd's mod of the HTTP protocol filetype <eg>
(e.g. by deleting the DDE Topic value)

If you are using IE6 (not IE7) you can refresh that
(e.g. restore to defaults values) by Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

I'll repeat my warning to IE7 readers since this is being cross-posted
into the IE General NG: if you are using IE7 this tip should not
be used on that version.

Robert,

I have used and wanted links to open in multiple windows and have used Jim's
method for some time.

If someone wanted to undo that change and was using IE7, would reverting
back to IE6, then running - regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll - and then downloading
IE7 again work?

I suppose so but I think it would be overkill. I just liked using the regsvr32
procedure instead of the regedit procedure because it was simpler and more
complete. If the only effect of Jim's mod is to change that DDE Topic value
then I would hope that changing it back to its default value of WWW_OpenURL
would be enough to do that. BTW in IE7 the regsvr32 procedure still works and
still has that repairing effect. The problem with using it is that Ramesh discovered
that it causes at least one incompatibility and who knows what all else different.
That's why the manual regedit would be better. I felt confident suggesting the
regsvr32 procedure for IE6 users because that command is used in more complete
IE Repair procedures, such as /rereg, etc.
