So I was just uninstalling some program when I realized that my desktop all of a sudden became empty!!!! I had nearly 6 GB of data on there, including my pictures, and it's all f***ing GONE!!

Seriously, can't you guys at Microsoft build something that works????? I used to back you up but now, lol, you guys have really outdone yourselves

There goes all my pictures, pics of my birthdays, girlfriends, family, etc. This is truly something that has prompted me to f***ing dump this piece of garbage into a trash can and get myself a Mac (I'll let the Apple guys conveniently transfer my files to my new Mac and then I'll dump this piece of junk). Yea, if you don't like this kind of posts on a Microsoft forum then you guys at MS better start thinking about the garbage you're putting out.

Yes. Your inability to correctly cleanup your machine and keep proper
backups of data important to you is Microsoft's fault/a faulty operating
system.

Right.

Good luck with your new choice. It's no better really - not if you keep the
same bad habits you obviously have now.

What should you have learned?

Don't do things you don't understand ... without having a backup (plan).
*grin*

I see you left out whatever program you were uninstalling, left out any
checks you may have done to see if the files are actually still there and
perhaps the uninstallaing of the program gave you a different profile and
everything is still on your computer but in another profile directoy or even
if you checked the recycle bin or not. But we don't want to get ahead of
your abilities. ;-)

If you don't have backups of your important data - that is *your* bad. The
machine could have been stolen. The machine could have melted, burned in a
fire, had a surge that fried the hard drive beyond repair - and you would be
in the same boat.

Get "Recuva" and search the entire drive.

Doncha love it when a 3 y/o throws a temper tantrum? How do I know he/she's

First thing first: please note, we're not from Microsoft. This is a Peer
to Peer newsgroup; the MVP's that post here are not necessarily MS employees
(in fact most are not), they are simply volunteers helping the community of
users and recognised by Microsoft for their contribution and therefore given
the MVP title. However if you wish to submit a bug, I advise to you use the
"Connect" (https://connect.microsoft.com/) facility on Microsoft's website,
that is the best way to reach the MS developers.

Now, to the problem:

1) Have you tried a search to see if you can find the files? I don't know
how you organise your PC's files and folders, but generally one would store
photos in the "Pictures" folder, for example.

2) You may have had short cuts on the desktop, to folders like the "My
Pictures" folder but the actual folder should still be on the drive,
although I'm not sure why a simple uninstall of a program would cause this
problem and delete/remove 6 gigs of data files.

3) Have you tried a system restore to a point before uninstalling the
application you mention?

3) When you say all the pictures are going, do you mean that the desktop
icons have disappeared - or just folders containing photos? To show all
desktop icons, right click the desktop, choose "View" option and (un)check
"Show Desktop Icons" depending on if it's selected or not. I don't know if
this will solve the problem.

4) Can you get into Windows explorer and browse the folders on the computer
e.g. Press the Windows key and letter "E" to open Windows Explorer; from
there you can go to your "documents" or "pictures" folders. You can also
browse to the actual "Desktop" folder in Windows Explorer.

5) Very unlikely, but perhaps you've logged on into another user account,
and the pictures and so on you mention wouldn't be visible if not associated
with that user profile, or in the "public" folders visible to all users.
That's the only other explanation I can think of.

Hope you reach a solution without the drastic measure of swapping to a
Macintosh!

You are what the MVP program meant to be and Shenan Stanle is why people
think the MVP program should be terminated and why the company now
provides their own support.

Seconded...

Both you and xfile need to be educated on what a troll is. This
pre-pubescent pr!ck didn't post here to request help with a problem.
He/she/it just wanted to throw a temper tantrum and where better than the
internet, where no one can see you're nothing but a 95lb. weakling with less
social skills than the common housefly.

Why are you storing data on the desktop? The only things on the desktop
should be shortcuts to programs and folders. The desktop is no place to store
important data. I have to remind my users of this constantly.

Please provide supporting information for your comment.

Example: what - in this conversation - did I do that so offended you (who is
not the original poster and may have interpretted things in your own way and
not as intended?)

Example: where did you get your information on the MVP program and people
wishing it to be terminated?

Example: When did Microsoft not provide support for their products?

The MVP program was terminated at one point and then brought back. It is a
volunteer system (these newsgroups are) and I am nothing more than a
volunteer that provides my assistance when asked for and for those I choose
to answer. Volunteer.

This conversation (and others like it) started out with people not being
necessarily reasonable and not really asking any questions. I take that
back - there was one question:

"Seriously, can't you guys at Microsoft build something that works?????",
and I did not answer that because - well - I am not a representative of
Microsoft nor work for them. ;-)

I gave actual things to try (search the drive, see if they have a temporary
profile and the files are in the original profile, recycle bin check, the
freeware program "Recuva", etc.) and pointed out that they should have
backups (not having backups of your important data is unwise, at best.)

No reason to soften the facts, no information was given, no real question
was asked. I replied and made suggestions that should work if the data
still exists/ever existed on the machine. Pointed out that backups *should*
be made of all important data.

It doesn't cease to amaze me that some people call me 'politically correct'
and others think I am 'too harsh' (what they choose to call
'non-professional' because it makes it look more ironic I would be a "Most
Valuable Professional".) Having people see both sides just shows it's is a
pure interpretation thing. What one person sees as harsh or cold, another
received great benefit from and is grateful. *shrug*

Is there sarcasm in some of my answers? Yep. It's there for levity. Some
get it, some don't. Interpretation.

Since you agreed enough to second everything said by "xfile" that means you
read, understood and agreed with all the points made and felt strong enough
about it to post your agreement. Since that is so - I would ask of you the

Worst part is, I saw the whole post as troll bait really. Another "oh
Windows sucks! Look what horrible things it did" post. I mean really,
who ever heard of everything on the desktop being wiped out by
uninstalling a program?

You only need to search google or the usenet for a few minutes to see
that the MVP program is producing a minority of people that can and do
help end users, and a majority that rip off the title and give bad advice
or are just plain rude.

I built, hosted, paid for, ran and moderated a Win98/XP help group and

I get sarcasm, but you had NO CLUE as to who the OP was, a little
prodding may have confirmed them as a troll, but alternatively they might
be just a very irate Windows user at the end of their tether...
You make assumptions of trolling on no evidence other than a possibly
hast post venting frustration.

If you think an OP is trolling, just ignore him. If you think you can
help, help him. Sarcasm will undoubtedly not help anyone other than give
a cheap laugh to the other lurkers.

As the OP is now silent, I can agree that it was a troll, and quite a
successful one it seems :~)

I still maintain that your reply is not good as a representation of the
MVP ideals, and you might do well to re-read them
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpfaqs
...."Microsoft has no expectations of MVPs beyond the normal expectations
of courtesy, professionalism, and adherence to the MVP code of conduct
and the community rules that we ask of all Microsoft community members"..

I am not prepared to get into trolling with YOU, but you did ask!
