Everything is set up correctly yet its black and white

Ive got a card that allows direct input into myy pc from s-video, however its always in black and white, ive gone through every setting possible, and its the same problem,

If the card also has a composite input, make sure it's configured to use
the s-video and not the composite.

Also check your s-video cable. S-video essentially sends a black and
white image on one wire, and color information on another wire. So if
only one wire is making a connection, you'll get a black and white
picture.

That could explain a lot!!
I've never managed to make svideo work, I have only ever got grainy B+W
images.
I can easily check the cable for continuity, but how can I check the output
of each wire?

I guess there *could* be a problem with either input or output socket
also... :-((
