Hi,

This is a very peculiar problem. The test page that I print from the
properties dialog from the control panel works just fine: the output is
perfectly clear. The output for a visio graphics file looks ok, too.

However, when I print text from windows applications (outlook, notepad,
word), every third line of text is faint. I've been all over the
printer driver settings, and even tried reinstalling the driver, all to
no avail.

Any suggestions?

I cannot recall whether this printer has a nozzle check that you can print but
if so I suggest you try to find it in printer properties. That is a better test
of the cartridges than the windows test print.
My bet is that this is a black cartridge problem that does not show up in the
windows test page or when you print a graphic.
You could try removing the black print head, drizzling a little cold water over
the nose piece at the bottom of the cartridge and drying it by pressing down
gently on a paper towel, be careful not to touch the nose piece with your
finger to avoid possible contamination. Do this a few times, if the printhead
has dried out a bit this may help to recover it. When you press the cartridge
onto a paper towel briefly (1 second or less) you should see two black imprints
on the towel, these should be pretty uniform, if not that is the probable cause.
