I have newly installed XP Pro. Microsoft recomends all user's to be on
limited accounts (accept 1) but my brother & I can not play EQ. unless we use
the Administrator's account. How can I make it so we can use our own accounts
and still be set to limited ?
Thank you for your help.

Some games will work with limited accounts after they have been installed and
run once either using an administrator account, or by temporarily changing the
limited user account(s) to an admin account in Control Panel / User Accounts,
just for the purpose of running the game the first time in order to be able to
install the necessary files and create the keys in the registry that it needs to
function, but may not be able to due to the restrictive nature of limited accounts.

If that mouthful doesn't resolve the issue, use the "Run As.." command instead:

1. Click Start / Control Panel / User Accounts / Create a New Account /
Name the Account: "able2play" (without quotes) / Next Pick: "Computer-
Administrator" & Click "Create Account";

2. Click on your new able2play account and Create a Password for it;

3. When your limited user wants to play a game that requires Administrator
privileges they can Right-Click the shortcut to that game / Click Run As... /
"The Following User": able2play and enter the password. Simple as that!

I know what you're thinking: That defeats the purpose of the limited user account.
To secure the "able2play" account so that it can't be used to logon to the computer:

First you can hide the account so that it won't show up on the Welcome Screen:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_hide_users.htm (thanks Doug!)

Next add a shortcut to the windows logoff routine into the RUN key of the
able2play registry. I made a reg patch to simplify this process if you wish to use it:

4. Logon to the "able2play" account,

5. <ONLY RUN THIS PATCH USING THE "ABLE2PLAY" ACCOUNT>
Save this patch to your drive and then doubleclick it to install it to your registry.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/OnlyRunUsingAble2PlayAccount.reg

or

*Instead of using the reg patch, click Start / Run / regedt32 / browse to:
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] and
Click Edit / New / String value / ValueName: logoff / Value data: logoff

From now on, if anyone logs on with the "able2play" account, the computer will log
them off immediately. They will not gain access to an administrators desktop! :-)

Thank you VERY much Jimmy & Doug for the help...I do have an admin. account
allready "for installing things" (as well as my limited that I use) so could
we use that Admin account as the "able2play" account ? And if so could I use
that "run as" trick to get the internet keyboard to run on the limited
desktops as well (because it says "error registry not found" for the
keyboard) when we log onto the limited desktops but not the admins. desktop?
I am definently going to hide that account though. How would one Turne off
that auto logoff part though? I may need to get on it some time.

Hi Roke,

I haven't published the method to turn off the autologoff to avoid
that information being used by the very people you're trying to
keep out of the account.

If you can trust those people with the account then there's no reason
to use the autologoff technique,

If you want to restrict other users effectively, use a 2nd admin account.

am limiting ANY of our accounts is because microsoft recomend's it for

security never hurts. I have set my account to limited but I can't get the

Hi Jimmy
Yes I am running XP Pro.I think I know what might be wrong. I have diabled
the remote desktop option in the "msconfig".So I think I will turne it back
on ( thought it was for remote assistance and I didn't want someone to be
able to "remote assistance me without permission".I thought it would give me
me security against hackers and such (oops).just in case that doesn't work
how would one find out if Norton did it & then turne that option back on??
Thanx Jimmy

Well I turned on remote desktop but to no evail. I uninstalled Norton & yes
it is the culprite for the missing option (run as) but I can make the game
pick "run with different credentials" in it's properties/advanced settings.
So that will work now =-)
One thing remains unusable - the internet keyboard still says "registry not
found" when we log on with a limited account.....Any ideas??
Thanx again Jimmy
ps. it's quite cool that my younger brother is Jimmy S. as well. & no I'm
not just saying that...Dave S. - Jimmy S. then we also have a Richard S. (the

I don't understand why that option might be missing unless
some of the 3rd party software (Norton's) changed the option.

Hello again Jimmy
Ok fair enough (good call) Well I have hidden the Admin's account &
passworded it ( mostly for kid & internet security purposses)The # 1 resson I
am limiting ANY of our accounts is because microsoft recomend's it for
internet security like trojans & such( I recently read it on the net ) before
we never were limited.I do have norton system works but a little more
security never hurts. I have set my account to limited but I can't get the
"run as" to come up when I right click on EQ. But I can get it to come up
when I am unlimited mmmm???? Do U have an idea about that & maybe even the
internet keyboard thing I mentioned before?( now take note that there isn't
an icon or a file in the start/programs section for the keyboard) basicly I
think I just need to know how to put a registry in for the limited accounts &
then the keyboard would recognise those accounts & let them use the special
keys right??

Thank you for being so helpfull and patient with me I realy do appreciate
all the help

Hi Roke,

I haven't published the method to turn off the autologoff to avoid
that information being used by the very people you're trying to
keep out of the account.

If you can trust those people with the account then there's no reason
to use the autologoff technique,

If you want to restrict other users effectively, use a 2nd admin account.

:

Hi Roke,

Name the Account: "able2play" (without quotes) / Next Pick: "Computer-
Administrator" & Click "Create Account";

2. Click on your new able2play account and Create a Password for it;
