Ever seven seconds you see the screen blink as if the
program were saving itself. If several programs are open
it slows the computer down. In Quicken it moves the curser
back to the date field and the date changes to today's
date. In most programs (like MS Word) the hour
glass "wait"appears and everything pauses. I have Norton
Firewall and anti viruse up to date and running and have
used spysweeper to look for spyware. I have shut every
thing I can thing of down (hardware and software) and it
keeps right on doing it. What ever it is make it very hard
to use some programs. Any one have a suggestion.

Run task manager to see if there is a process that is intermittently
running at 100% cpu. Load up a typical work session when you do this
since it could be one of your usual programs. Start Run "msconfig",
startup tab, and review all of the startup programs. Use this site for
guidance on what the startup programs do:

You say you have anti virus up to date AND running. That is your problem.
You are probably running a virus scanner. Shut it down, better yet delete it
for a much better running system. .
