On a few occasions I have come across Windows XP computers that are
rebooting unexpectedly, but no shutdown or unexpected shutdown events
are showing up in the event log. I have one case now specifically
where I can see frequent 6009 and 6005 events, but there is no
preceeding event indicating a shutdown expected or not. Additionally
there are no system event log messages previous to that for several
hours. This would seem to indicate the computer is locking up. I
know the users is manually powering off the computer when he comes
upon it hung and powering it up, but again there is no indication that
the last shutdown was unexpected. This particular computer is a Dell
and the user noted that the power light flashes orange or amber and
then he powers it off and back on. Typically I would suspect a power
supply in this case and that might be it, but I would really like to
solve the mystery of the missing shutdown events since I know I have
seen this before as well. Any insight is much appreciated.
