We are running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The Event Logs are empty. Is
there a way to turn on the logs?

Thanks.

Make sure the 'Event Log' service is running. The files may be corrupt.
Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General, set
the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move) the
corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event Log
Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

Thank you very much for your quick response.

Do you have any ideas why the Event Viewer stops logging? Could the
hardware problem make the Event Viewer stops logging?

The System Event file icon is grayed out. The Application and Security
icons look normal.

Thanks.

* More than likely file corruption.

* Doubtful but what hardware problem?

* Have you tried deleting the file?
%windir%\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt

The server shutdown with the blue screen since Sunday. I brought the server
up on Monday morning. The server went down two times on Monday. When I
was at the server yesterday morning, I saw the message
"Unexpected_kernel_mode_trap" at the blue screen. Today, the server seems
to be functioning. But, that does not mean the problem will go away.

I sent your suggestions to my supervisor for approval to fix the Event
Viewer. I'll let you know the results.

Thanks so much for your help.

This may also help.

My boss decided to build a new server to replace this server.

This server used to be an NT Primary Domain Controller. Then, we built a new
Windows 2000 Server and upgraded this PDC to a Windows 2000 Domain
Controller. This server is running DHCP and is also a Primary Wins Server.

Since we are going to build a new server to replace this server, do you
expect any problems? Is there something that we should know about?

Thanks.

You may want to start a new thread on this issue. None that I know of
specifically.
