Event Logs have disappeared, and just now have returned.

On Windows 2000 Pro the Event Logs appeared empty. System, Security &
Application appear, but when I click on any of them no logs appear. They
were there last night but were gone at least for a while this morning,
inspite of several reboots. But they have just now reappeared after the
latest reboot. All I remember doing was to run Scandisk, Defrag, updated the
video card driver, and changed the power supply. (The reason for the
changes is that the user has been reporting that when he scrolls in a
program such as Adobe Reader, there are often pauses that last up to 5
seconds. The fan on the power supply was not turning so I changed the power
supply.)

They've just now reappeared after I rebooted after installing Adobe Reader
updates.

What could cause the Event Logs to disappear?

The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Then; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event
Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;
