When I log on to my domain controller and start the event viewer, I have a
DNS Events on the left but nothing shows in the actual log area. I've
checked the log fill is there in ...\system32\config. The date on the file
is right. It just doesn't show in the viewer. I have another domain and
the dns log shows fine on that one.

What would cause that? I've checked every flag and setting and all looks
ok. How can I view my dns events?

Do you have any filters set? If you connect to this machine from Event
viewer on another machine, do they show up? If you create a new MMC with
Event viewer, do they show up?
