The normal Event Log service is missing.

In other words when I look at Services there is no Event Log
service

I discovered this when I went to view the event log.

The Event Viewer will give an "Interface Unknown" when clicking on
Application, Security, or System

Does anyone know how to fix this?

The Event Log Service is not started. Most likely it is disabled.

1) Right Click on My Computer and Click Manage
2) Click Services in the Left Pane
3) Scroll down to Event Log and double click
4) Change the Startup type to Automatic
5) Click OK
(The Event Log service will not allow you to manually start it, so yo
must reboot the computer for this to take effect)

After your computer boots back up you should be able to access th
event logs.

Hope This Helps

Check for the existence of this key. If not found create a *.reg file from
another machine and import.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

Brilliant - that worked

Exported EventLog Key from laptop
Imported to Broken Machine

Everything works.

Deeply appreciated.

I found this same issue with others when Googling
No one could provide a fix

I will respond to their issues with your suggested fix with
credit to you.

Thanks again

Glad to hear it helps. Odd that it was missing.

how to do?

I have the same problem that Jerry has in that my Event Log service is missing from my services menu, i noticed he said that creating and importing this *.reg file worked for him.
I was wondering how exactly you checked for the key and how exactly you created and imported the reg key from another computer, i'm running vista home edition if that makes any discernable difference.
Thank you

correction...when i created the .reg key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog from another computer and tried to merge it onto my machine, it tells me "Cannot import "L:\Eventlog.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes." but my machine is running off a fresh reboot with no other tasks started, so i don't know what could be using the processes...therefore, i still can't get an MSINFO report because when i run msinfo32 from the run menu, it still tells me that my windows management instrumentation is missing

and furthermore, when i go to the services menu, "Event Log" is not started (even though it is set to automatic) and when i try to start it thought the properties menu, an error pops up saying "Windows could not start the Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
and i tried to fix my WMI repository using windows file checker... sfc /scannow from the command prompt, which is supposed to scan the registry and fix any corrupt files, but all it tells me is that it found corrupt files and cannot fix them.
Any help...anything to get this to work would be greatly appreciated...i just need an MSINFO report and this is proving to be a weeklong problem
thank you
