i have two computers, one is at work that i just
installed windows xp home edition on last night, and a pc
at home that i've had running xp home as well for the
last 3 or 4 months. the home unit i have been accessing
the internet without problems in that entire time. but
now, they both get this same error whenver i connect to
the internet, usually with 60 seconds.
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated
unexpectedly.
it gives me 60 seconds to do whatever i need to do, and
then it shuts down. i've seached the knowledge base for
hours to no avail. anyone have any ideas?

You have been infected with the W32/Lovsan worm,
also refered to as the msblast worm, or RPC worm:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Disconnect the network cable from the infected machine
untill you have completed disinfection.

The following page contains a link to a standalone removal
tool which you can download and run:
(Read the notes for XP users re. System Restore.)

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100547.htm

Then download and install the patch from here:
( be sure to get the correct one. )

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980

Then, you ought to consider running a firewall which would block
this kind of intrusion. By not having a firewall in place, you not only
run the risk of getting infected yourself, you also risk infecting others
when your machine is compromised.

Also, you may want to visit windowsupdate from time to time and
pick up the latest Critical updates. These are often released to plug
any security hole before any malicious code is in the wild which
exploits that hole. This security hole was plugged around a month ago.
