On a high-end games machine, XP pro. During a chkdsk on drive C I found the
following event view entries relating to drive D. I can't make any sense of
MS' 'explanation' for this kind of gobbledegook. Can anyone interpret it? And
at least, what are the chances drive D has a hardware fault?

Well, thanks for trying, but no, really. That's the link I'd read, which
purports to explain how to interpret all that (presumably) non-base10
numerology I've posted. I don't understand it! The only thing I can glean is
that were it my C: (system) drive I ought to be more worried. My paging file
is on D (I've 2 x 500g drives), so want to know if this is some routine thing
that happens, or a symptom of a hardware fault. Since it's a newish computer
(Dec), it'd be nice to know.

User Action
If these events are logged regularly on a primary system drive, replace the
device. Otherwise, no user action is required.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

It may be a symptom of a future hardware failure. It means it had a bad read or write operation. I
would download a diagnostic disk for your drive from the manufacturer to test the drive.

OK, thanks for that, Wesley. Sounds reassuring anyway!

OK, downloaded the Seagate's disk checker (had to install Microsoft .net
Framework 2 for it to work). Both drives passed the short checks. So fingers
crossed.

Thanks Dave (and Wesley).

Hello,

I had the same problem with my WD 500GB external drive... I tested the hdd with all the utilities possible... FINALLY.... I changed the USB CABLE with a better insulated(stiffer) and shorter cable... never had a problem since.

I wouldn't be surprised if bad SATA or IDE cables proved to be a big problem too.

May i add that i used the supplied cable that came with the hdd to find out that it is unsuitable. Gave me quite a fright ... losing 500GB of data.

Once I replaced the cable, all problems (that I can see so far) are
gone.

Thanks for sharing your troubleshooting methods...
