Hey!

I just installed a second DC, Win 2003, which now is getting this error,
Event ID 4515:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4515
Date: 10/23/2003
Time: 11:50:22 AM
User: N/A
Computer: TAZ
Description:
The zone webtech.local was previously loaded from the directory partition
MicrosoftDNS but another copy of the zone has been found in directory
partition DomainDnsZones.webtech.local. The DNS Server will ignore this new
copy of the zone. Please resolve this conflict as soon as possible.

If an administrator has moved this zone from one directory partition to
another this may be a harmless transient condition. In this case, no action
is necessary. The deletion of the original copy of the zone should soon
replicate to this server.

If there are two copies of this zone in two different directory partitions
but this is not a transient caused by a zone move operation then one of
these copies should be deleted as soon as possible to resolve this conflict.

To change the replication scope of an application directory partition
containing DNS zones and for more details on storing DNS zones in the
application directory partitions, please see Help and Support.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any idea what could be going on here and/or how to fix this?

Thanks!

Seems like a misconfiguration of the zone. Make it a Primary instead of AD
Integrated and see if that helps. Then change it back once you've confirmed
that the Primary zone is functioning properly and check your Event log
again.

Tried that.
Made it Primary only, restarted DNS. No errors! :)
Tried to change it back to AD Integrated, but get the error:

The data on the primary zone failed to set.
The property is invalid.

Any good idea on how to solve that?
Delete the whole zone and recreate it?

Thanks Ace!

Not sure at this point. You could give it a shot. Remove DNS. Delete the
system32\dns folder. Delete the CCS\Services\DNS folder. Delete the
system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files. Restart, then reinstall
DNS.

Would be helpful knowing what OS this is (looks like w2k3). Need a little
config info. Can you post an unedited ipconfig /all? Please let use know
what the AD DNS Domain name is (as it shows up in ADUC). Also, what errors
are you getting in any of your Event logs?

Oh wow! That is too wild!
After making it a Primary only, and not being able to change it back to AD
Integrated, I went on lunch.. when I came back.. it had changed by itself to
AD Integrated DNS... !
And now I don't have the errors anymore.. ! Strange!!

Thanks a lot Ace! :)

Hello All,

I have been involved in an issue to where this same problem seem to
manifest itself. In this scenario ADSIEDIT was used to look at the
DomainDNSZones parition. Duplicate zones were located in the
DomainDNSZones application partition and the other was under the Domain NC
- system - Microsoft DNS location used for Windows 2000 compatible AD
integrated zones. The DNS servers were actually using the zone in the
domain naming context so ADSIEDIT was used to load the DomainDNSZones
parition and rename the duplicate zone in that partition to a different
name. A reboot and the problem went away.

Interesting. I havent come across this issue yet, but will keep that in
mind. It may explain what was happening with Per's issues.
Thanks!

Actually I rebooted my server several times without any cure.
Using your idea Ace, to change it to a Primary DNS fixed it without a
reboot.
And is still working after a reboot! :)

Cool. Maybe it's just a bootup issue, or based on Shane suggestions too, but
if you don't need an AD Integrated zone, let's keep it to a Primary for now.

Cheers!
