Hi,
I get the following error in the system event log every 40 minutes.

Source: Wins
ID: 4204
Desc: WINS could not read from the User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
socket.

I tried to set MCastIntvl registry value to it's maxamum, but it doesn't
help.
I also tried to set UseSelfFndPnrs to 0 but it also did not help.
The event is occuring 5 times every 40 minutes and when the service is
starting.
The WINS server seems to work fine.
I have a Novell 3.2 on the network.
Any ideas?
Asaf.

Hi Asaf,

I believe that this issue is the result of a destination host unreachable
message being sent in response the WINS service Automatic Partner
Configuration function.
The default is for a multicast service announcement to be sent out over the
wire every 40 minutes. The feature is designed to let the WINS servers
announce
themselves for automatic replication. The idea is as an alternative to
statically configured WINS replication partnerships. Most people are not
using this and your
issue should be easily resolvable with the following registry settings in
the article listed below:

151761 WINS Server Sends IGMP Packets on Startup
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=151761

If you do wish to keep this functionality in place, then our next step will
to be to get a network monitor trace from the WINS server while the WINS
service is
restarted, as this will cause the same multicast packets to be sent. As
stated above, something on your network is replying to these multicasts with
a Destination
Host Unreachable message. The goal will then be to isolate what is replying
to these broadcasts and then to disable that behavior.

Thank You.

Diana.
