After more then 2years successfull running DNS on
W2K+DC+SP4+AD+Exchange2000 the DNS stops responding after
4 hours or something, after i restart the service it works
again the only message i can fins in the DNS evenlog is
below:

"The DNS server was unable to complete directory service
enumeration of zone domain.com. This DNS server is
configured to use information obtained from AD for this
zone and is unable to load the zone without it.Check that
the AD is functioning properly and repeat enumeration of
the zone. The event data contains the error"

Not sure if this explain the error, but it is the only
thing i can find....any idea's how to fix or clean DNS ?
Add/Remove of DNS will not be an option, since it will
kill my AD and Exchange i guess.

Any suggestion is welcome !
Thnx,
Marcel

You did not post the Event ID #. I believe it is 4004. So if the case....

Make sure the DNS server only points to itself for DNS. Do NOT point at the
ISP for DNS. Also, this error may occur during a
normal boot cycle. If this error only occurs during or shortly after a
reboot, you can safely ignore it.

Also, if you have 2 DC/DNS servers, (once again, the provided info is very
limited), to avoid this error, make sure you have the following under IP
properties:

DC1:
First DNS address points to DC2.
Second DNS address points to itself.
DC2:
First DNS address points to DC1.
Second DNS address points to itself.

If you continue to have errors, *please* post additional info about your
configuration, such as:

1. Unedited ipconfig /all
2. The AD DNS domain name
3. Number of DCs (if yoiu have two, please post an ipconfig /all of both of
them)
4. Service Pack level
5. The server the 4004 is coming up on, does it have many excessive
apps/services running on it or is it a slow/older machine?

Hi Ace,
First of all thnx for your quick responce.

I think we can forget this warning and go back to the
original problem and that is that my DNS stops working
after some hours..the service is still running but a query
is not working until i restart the DNS service.
The problem is that i cannot find any error in the eventlog
except 4004. I tried to un-install DNS this weekend on a
test machine, but after that i cannot install DNS again
with the same name (Zone already exist) i even renamed
the original DNS folder before re-install.
Just a day before this i changed to "primary" DNS instead
of a DNS AD integrated one...but still it stop's
responding after some time. So now i just do a stop/start
with a script every hour to keep Mail/Internet available
for the users.

1. Not available at the moment, but the DNS setting
is only pointing to it self
2. company.nl (just a word no numbers)
3. This is the only DC running in this domain with
Exchange2000 installed.

It was running fine for about two years now, and nobody
touch the system except myself.and i didn't touch it for
some months now. (to be honest i didn't look if windows
update is running)and there is about 2Gb free diskspace

Any suggestions is welcome,
Marcel

Hi Marcel,

I was hoping to see the ipconfigs. Understand if reluctant to post them.

I would suggest to udate it to SP4 and any other updates available. This can
also occur if the system is overburdened. Ex2k can do this to a DC.

Hi,
I will drop the original ipconfig later today but i do not
understand why you like to see it because it has nothing
todo with my problem that DNS stops responding after some
time the ip config will be pritty straight like:

IP 192.168.0.3/24
GW 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.03

And running successfully for almost two years now !
The system is up to date with SP4 and all Security related
patches, and almost sure that the system is powerfull
enough(dual PentiumIII,512Mb RAM and about 25 mailboxen)

I wanted to look to see if you had a single label name (the Primary DNS
Suffix).

Other than that, I'mnot sure where to look, other than surmizing you are
being attacked or excessive traffic is locking it up. A Netmon capture or
some other packet capture tool would sound like a better bet to see what's
happening right before it stops responding.
