I just reconnected to a hub (DLINK Fast Ethernet Switch Model DSS-5+) & my 2
PC (W2K) peer-to-peer workgroup seems to be functioning A-OK.

However, my event log now starts to repeatedly issue warnings as
follows:( I have 'X' edited IP addresses for security purposes)
##############################################################
Event Type: Warning

Event Source: Dhcp

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1007

Date: 8/3/2003

Time: 7:49:21 AM

User: N/A

Computer: ABS

Description:

Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network
Card with network address 0050BAD3XXXX. The IP address being used is
169.254.XXX.XXX.

Data:

0000: 00 00 00 00

#####################################################################

I have seen these warnings on my previous workgroup configurations & ignored
them.

Checking the MS KnowlgeBase I found a reference to error 1007 that gives a
different error description than the one I get. Please refer to MSKBase
article# 200462: It says, partially:

Event ID: 1007
Source: DhcpServer
Description: The DHCP server failed to initialize Winsock data.
The following error occured: [No further data is available]

###########################################################################

QUESTION(S):

1. Why am I being warned in my situation?

2. What, if anything, can I do to eliminate the cause of the warning?

3. Generally, is there a guideline I can use to determine when I can safely
ignore an event warning vs. having to address them?

4. Why are there two different error descriptions for Event ID 1007 - my OS
description vs. MS Article# 200462 ?

Thank you so much!

Yup, If you had that checked and weren't running a DHCP server you would get
that error. I assume you have static IP's on your 2 machines then. Sounds
like it's solved Also, you probably don't want to be running NETBIOS on a
machine connected to the internet anyway. You don't need it on a Win2k
network when you have no pre-win2k machines, and it's a security problem.
You're better off with out it.

Thank you, Conrad, but with your help I discovered a better answer that
squelches Event Error 1007 after trying to get a better understanding of
DHCP. I am posting my findings for your info & anyone else's.

I reviewed my TCP/IP property settings & discovered after clicking
'Advanced' that the 'WINS' tab was checked for:
'Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP Server.' (Hmmmm?) The 'Help' popup for that
setting says use only if the user has a DHCP server (or a device like a
router that has DCHP server function built in) My workgroup at this time
has neither a hardware nor a software DHCP function! Ergo that setting must
be causing the event error 1007?!!??

SO, I unchecked the latter setting & checked: 'Disable NetBIOS over
P/IP' -- Then I closed my Internet dialup connection, IExplorer & Outlook
Express, and opened my Event Viewer, & dialed up again.

AHA! No more Event ID 1007. Case closed for now!

(Please Note: The System Log had previously posted Event ID 1007 every time
I had connected to the Internet before I changed my TCP/IP setting as
described above.)

"Message generated when a computer is configured to obtain its IP address
automatically (from a DHCP server) but no DCHP server answered the request.
A random IP address (within the 169.254.0.0 range) is assigned to the
computer. Check the availability of a DHCP server for that segment"
