On more than one of my DNS servers I keep getting the following error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7063
Date: 8/27/2003
Time: 12:29:42 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DAVINCI
Description:
The DNS server is configured to forward to a non-recursive DNS server at
192.55.83.30.

DNS servers in forwarders list MUST be configured to process recursive
queries.
Either
1) fix the forwarder (192.55.83.30) to allow recursion
- connect to it with DNS Manager
- bring up server properties
- open "Advanced" tab
- uncheck "Disable Recursion"
- click OK
OR
2) remove this forwarder from this servers forwarders list
- DNS Manager
- bring up server properties
- open "Forwarders" tab
- remove (192.55.83.30) from list of forwarders
- click OK

I get this error for multiple IP addresses, NONE of which I have listed as
forwarders. I can't find anything on the Microsoft site about this, nor
have I successfully found answers using Google. How on earth are these
unknown (to me) IP addresses appearing to my DNS servers as forwarders?

That IP is one of the GTLD servers.

Name: m.gtld-servers.net
Address: 192.55.83.30

A GTLD server has the references for .com's, .net's, etc... They usually
have the RA bit turned off (Recursion Available - the ability to use it as a
forwarder). Here's a definition of a GTLD:

What forwarder have you configured to use for your DNS server? Maybe that
server is being used by a server downstream from the one you did configure
as a forwarder and you're getting the error from the recursive query.

Thank you SO much for your explanation. I had it pointing to a server in
our other site as a forwarder. What's odd is that I have always had it
configured thusly but only recently started seeing the errors. I may have
changed logging levels though, and don't recall doing so. I just started
noticing several of these errors with a variety of IP's and started freaking
out, wondering if I had some sort of security breach. Your reply has helped
ease my worries. I'm sure that is the problem (pointing to a downstream
server) so I'm going to do some changing to the forwarders and see what
transpires. Thanks again!

No prob for the help and to alleviate your concerns. Try 4.2.2.2 as a
forwarder. It works fine.
