Jim

I apologize. I'm sure the answer to this is listed in some support page,
but I can't find it. Also, I'm open to opinions, since some searches take me
down bad paths regarding Promise controllers and device drivers which can't
be updated and probably aren't relevant or correct.

I have posted a system event log entry at the end of this message. My
problem is that I have no clue which drive "\Device\Harddisk3\DR3" refers to.
This laptop system has 4 drives listed for the memory card slots, which
aren't in use, a DVD drive, two internal hard drives, two external sata
drives on a pcmcia controller card, as well as external USB drives on two
external USB hubs.

This rather upsetting and annoying error comes up exactly once and only
once, at just about exactly one hour after I reboot the system, every time
it's rebooted. The error does not show up when none of the externals are
connected. Hence, drive 3 is NOT the first or second internal drive.
That's not exactly a stupid thing to wonder, though, since the DVD is D: and
the second hard drive is E:, which, by some methods of counting (and by the
list of drives in windows explorer) would actually make it drive 3.

In the System Event Log, how do I relate the drive numbers to the disk
numbers in the Disk Management list? It's not obvious that Harddisk3 is the
same as Disk 3. Is it? Does the numbering in the event log entry start from
zero? or does it start from one? Or, even worse, does it start from one or
zero for each controller (or, "Device")? And if this last case, how do I
know which controller or device?

One time consuming and annoying test I can do and have not yet done is to
reboot the system, leaving off one drive at a time, or, equivalently, hooking
up just one external drive at a time. Logic says to start with the one
listed as Disk3 in the Disk Management list, but before I start playing
around with a system that works just fine and is depended upon, I'd like to
start with more knowledge and facts.

Oh, it's windows XP Pro. Somewhat well updated. I vaguely thought this
started around some update about a year ago, but I don't have any good
evidence of that.

thank you for your time,
Jim
