Computer locked up, Ctrl, alt, del didn't work so I had to
do a reset. Got the message that "One disk needs to be
checked for consistency". Many files were said to
be "first allocation unit is not valid. The entry will be
truncated", whatever that means. Upon completion of that
check, probably 90% of all my links and shortcuts were no
longer usable and many of my program folders are now
empty, including Norton Antivirus. My desktop background
is gone, some shortcut icons are the generic icon instead
of the custom program icon. What has happened to my
computer??? I can't even do a System Restore, the restore
screen begins to launch and then just stalls. If anyone
has any suggestions, it'd be fantastic...I have no clue
what to do.

Thanks in advance

As you already guessed, there is probably a corrolation between the disk
errors and the missing files.

Check your drive (root folder) for files with a .chk extension. The .chk
files are the result of "lost chains" that got recovered when chkdsk (check
disk) ran. These sorts of errors usually happen when the computer is shut
down prematurely.

In most cases, it is difficult to recover the lost files from the .chk files
(unless the lost files were simple text files).
