Hello:

Since we swiched our network to VoIP with a new private
IP addressing we are experiencing network slowness.
I am receiving via event viewer the following:

"Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for
your computer network, Ret value 59". Source userenv.

Today 2 98 machines could not get authenticated. After
some time they were able to login.

Also, one minute the network is fast (file is transfering
in seconds and then it takes 60 minutes.

Can you help to interpret this error?

Thanks.

How many nics in the server? Do you have WINS installed? W98 still needs
that. Also options 044 and 046 (0x8) should be set in DHCP-server, scope
options.
Does the ipconfig/all from the clients show that everything is pointing to
the server-IP?

Hello:

My machine's IP settings point to default gateway. We
are running a member server in a department and it it
running WINS server that is set to the same IP address as
DHCP server. We are authenticated now by the company's
domain controller and not our server (is was a seperate
domain before). Our sloweness started at the point when
we were re-set to private IP addresses and to a new
switch. Our IT people are re-setting swiches (Cisco) to
100 full duplex and same setting on each machines. XP
clients seems to respond in some way to change from the
Auto setting. Before change we were ok with the auto
settings on the clients. 98 machines seem to have more
problems then XP. Network speed is flactuating, seems
faster early morning.

Hello:
Just a correction - DNS and WINS server settings are the
same (not DHCP), sorry for a mistake.

Hello:

Thanks for your assistance. After 4 painful weeks the
problem was determined and it turned to be a faulty
uplink cable. It was replaced and everything worked as
before.
Apparently, the problem was not showing on the switch as
it was itermmitent but everyone was pointing to a server.

Thanks again.

Hi Danka,

Don't you love those hardware faults? I'm glad you've got it going now
again.
Thanks for reporting back.
