Highlight tool is not an option in PowerPoint. The easiest solution is to
insert a semi-transparent yellow rectangle over the text and animate it in
(the wipe can be made to look like you are highlighting it as you go,
impresses the uninformed).

How do I simply highlight a line of text like in Word; i.e. I don't
see a highlighter tool anywhere.

Thanks for the reply, however, this isn't a question about a
transition. It's a question of collaborating while creating
presenations:

1) There is no way to track changes
2) There is no way to highlight items that need to be reviewed/
changed
3) This lack of functionality is ridiculous

BTW, using your solution, if you move text around or insert/delete
lines, the highlight box stays put while the text moves around.
Again, ridiculous behavior by PP.
