evaluation motherboards socket extenders for pentium

hi

i research voltage issues of processors. i want to measure the
processor voltage by tapping the pins of the processor. could anyone
suggest me some processor evaluation motherboards? also, could anyone
tell me how i can tap the pins of the processor. i was thinking that
i could buy a processor extension slot that would give me access to
the processor pins. do any exist for processors? i know that for
smaller (non-cpu) chips, some specialised sockets are available for
this purpose.

i plan on using the intel pentium 4 processor.


any suggestions are welcome.

Measure from the underside of the board... As far as I know, all CPU sockets
still use pins into holes to mount and not surface mount.

As someone else mentioned, go from the back of the board. There are 2
problems I see with a socket extension. First, how do you mount the
Heatsink/fan after the extension socket is mounted. It will raise the CPU
above the regular socket, which means the normal heatsink will not mount
the same way. The Heat sink will also be in the way of the extension, so
wires will have to be run to the edge of the heatsink.

The second problem is any added distance and wires hanging off the socket
can and probably will cause significant timing issues. With 478 wires
runing to the edge of a heatsink at the frequencies chips currently run at,
cross talk, ringing, signal loss, etc are sure to be problems.

The only practical way, and the easiest way, is to go from the back of the
board.

Measuring from the back side of the MB is the best way, but often the
MB has voltage regulators (transistors) accessible from the top of the
MB whose output goes directly to the processor power bus. Very little
difference would be found if measured at the output pins of these
regulators. JUST BE CAREFUL.

i hope to measure this from the back of the MB or power regulator. do
you know someone who does measurements like this? i can visit
him(her) and look at his equipment etc. i thought about trying to
access the back of the MB with a probe, but my probe seems to be a
horrible misfit for such work. my probe is simply too big for it.


also, how do i locate the power regulator?
